Tías Ayuntamiento has begun the task of pruning and treating the palm trees in the municipality, starting on the Avenida de las Playas in Puerto del Carmen.
Mayor José Juan Cruz said that the aim of the project is to “maintain and assure the future of our palms, which are suffering the effects of various fungi and the Diocalandra beetle, which has caused the death of many of them.”
Environment councillor Carmen Rodríguez said that each palm would be assessed and treated individually, and also declared that the palms had suffered greatly from the drought of recent years.
The 200 palms on the Avenida de las Playas will be the first to be treated, followed by trees in the rest of Tías.
