Thousands of pilgrims accompanied the image of the Virgin de los Dolores as it was taken down to Arrecife from Mancha Blanca yesterday.
This was the first time in 59 years that the sculpture of Lanzarote’s patron, also known locally as our Lady of the Volcanoes, had descended to the capital. The occasion marked Arrecife’s 225th anniversary.
The pilgrimage started at 7 am, and the parade made its way through San Bartolomé and down the hill to Arrecife, where a ceremony of welcome was held at Playa Reducto. The image was later carried to the church of San Ginés, where it will remain for the next week.
