Last week saw the beginning of a number of training courses to help the Guardia Civil better communicate with those who are hearing impaired.

In collaboration with the Association of Deaf People of Arrecife & Lanzarote (APSAL) the first course focussed on the traffic police. The new courses are part of a project in which they intend to hold regular training sessions with traffic police in order to improve professionalism and the quality of services that can be provided to residents.

The purpose of the training is to raise awareness among Guardia Civil personnel about those with hearing difficulties and how they can better facilitate them. For example, through practical workshops they will learn the basics of sign language should they need to use it.

The class showed an eagerness to continue the course in favour of helping the hearing impaired.
