The Lanzarote Cabildo has officially adopted a new name, becoming the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, following the introduction of the new Canary Islands Island Councils Act.

The legislation, which came into effect on 30 June, formally recognises La Graciosa in the institution’s official title for the first time. The change is included in the fourth additional provision of the new law and reflects La Graciosa’s status as the eighth inhabited island of the Canary Islands.

The law also acknowledges La Graciosa’s integration into the island’s administrative structure, bringing the institution’s name into line with the current legal and territorial framework.

Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort described the move as an important institutional milestone.

“Today is an important day for our institution and for all the citizens of both islands. For the first time in the Canary Islands, a process of this nature has officially incorporated the name of a second island into a Cabildo. It is a recognition that reflects an institutional and territorial reality,” he said.

Betancort added that the new name recognises the role La Graciosa plays within the island administration and brings the institution’s identity into line with the reforms introduced through the updated Statute of Autonomy.

The administrative process of updating the institution’s official name has now begun. Over the coming months, the new title will be introduced across official documents, records, institutional communications, signage and other identifying materials.
