Isla Sin Corrupcion has reported the destruction of the formation known as “the Sphinx” at Teseguite.
The formation was one of the strange figures created by wind and rain at the Rofero de Teseguite, where volcanic gravel was once mined. The area has become a popular sight on the tourist trail, and it is common to see several cars parked in the area.
Local photographer Pedro Borges Saavedra posted a video of the destroyed figure, along with a metal bar that was presumably used to knock it down. The video was accompanied by the words “Don’t tell me that it’s outsiders, that tourism is ruining the island. NOOO. Nobody takes an iron bar like this onto a plane.”
The act has been compared with the cutting down of the Leaning Palm tree at Masdache in 2022, which also attracted many visitors until was sawn down by an unknown person.
