Last Friday, Teguise Ayuntamiento commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Teguise Market at the Casa Museo del Timple.
The commemoration was an emotional one in which tribute was paid to all the mayors and public officials who have been in charge of the municipality in the last four decades, recognising their involvement in the growth of the biggest and most popular weekly market on Lanzarote.
During the ceremony, former mayors Dimas Martín, José Dimas Martín, Juan Pedro Hernández, Oswaldo Betancort and the current mayor, Olivia Duque, were recognised for their work in the upkeep and development of the weekly market, which has managed to grow, reinvent itself and remain as one of the largest regular events in Teguise and Lanzarote.
Current Teguise Mayor, Olivia Duque, expressed her gratitude to all public officials who, with their dedication and effort, have contributed to consolidate the market as a benchmark for tourism and local development. She also gave words of recognition for the neighbours, as well as for all those responsible for the stalls.
The former mayors agreed that the market has been able to reinvent itself, adapt to changing times and remain as a space of life, economy and identity of Teguise. In addition, they recalled that Teguise Ayuntamiento have always promoted modernisation measures, control and management, to ensure a safe and quality experience for both vendors and the attending public.
“We have been able to adapt the Mercadillo de la Villa to residents and visitors with actions of reorganisation of spaces, security plans, digitalisation of procedures and reinforcement of support staff, to make it one of the most important in the Canary Islands,” they emphasised.
