Bathing was prohibited on Famara yesterday after five or six Blue Dragons were found on the shore.
The Blue Dragon is a type of sea slug that floats freely in the high seas and feeds on jellyfish such as the Portuguese Man o’ War, whose stinging cells it stores in its own appendages.
As a result, the little dragon, which measures around an inch in length, can also cause stings that lead to nausea, pain, vomiting, and acute allergic reactions.
Reports say that lifesavers have raised the Red Flag on Famara, although it already flies there permanently, warning bathers against strong tidal rips and currents.
