Watersports associations gathered at Arrecife’s Sailing Club yesterday to express their total opposition to the planned fish farms off the coast of Arrecife, Playa Honda and Matagorda.
Sailing, canoeing and diving clubs claim that the proposed fish farms will negatively affect sailing regattas, swimming and triathlon contests and other maritime sporting activities. At the meeting Julio Romero, president of the Real Club Nautico, stated that the associations would present formal objections to the project, and may even stage a demonstration.
The controversy concerning the fish farms was revived earlier this week when the Canarian Government chose the Yaizatun company, which has recently been forced to cease activity at Playa Quemada, to operate the fish farms.
