Prosecutors have requested a sentence of eight years for a man who was caught smuggling drugs into Lanzarote hidden in boxes of potatoes and onions.

The accused was stopped by police at the roundabout near the port last year, after picking up various boxes of vegetables from a transport company. On inspection, the boxes were found to contain bars of cannabis resin, blocks of cocaine, cocaine powder and 100 g of MDMA. The estimated value of the drugs was €3723,000.

The accused was charged with offences against public health and has been held on remand since last year. Prosecutors in the trial, which is taking place in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, are demanding a sentence of eight years and a fine of €800,000.
