Yesterday afternoon, three flights bound for Lanzarote Airport had to be diverted to Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria due to the gusts of wind already affecting the island, La Voz reports.
According to AENA, one of the flights was an EasyJet aircraft from London and the other was a Ryanair aircraft from Edinburgh. Both aircraft landed without incident at Fuerteventura airport, where they will remain until weather conditions improve. In addition, a Vueling flight from Barcelona had to be diverted to Gran Canaria.
The diversions were some of the first consequences of Storm Claudia. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has raised the alert level to orange for rainfall in Lanzarote, La Graciosa, and the rest of the islands. Accumulated rainfall of up to 30 millimeters per hour is expected, accompanied by showers and strong winds.
In Arrecife, which already experienced flooding at the beginning of the year, there is a 10-40% chance that rainfall will once again affect the capital.
The Canarian Government has declared an alert for the risk of flooding, rain, and wind, and is maintaining a pre-alert for storms and high waves.
