Several events are planned around the island to celebrate Canary Day on 30th May (Thursday). The date is a public holiday on the Canary Islands, meaning that schools, public buildings, and several shops are likely to be closed, especially outside the resorts.

Arrecife will host a concert by legendary Canarian folk group Los Sabandeños tomorrow evening (Wed 29th) at 8.30 pm in the Parque Ramírez Cerda, following a separate folk music concert at in La Recova (the old marketplace behind the Ayuntamiento).

On Thursday, there’ll be cheese and wine tasting in the Plaza de San Ginés from 11 am and singer José Veléz will perform in the Parque Ramírez Cerda at 8.30 pm. Another “musical event” is scheduled for 8pm on Friday.

In Puerto del Carmen, the main events will take place throughout Thursday 30th May in the Plaza del Varadero in the old town. There’ll be several performances by folk groups, displays of Canarian crafts, jolatero workshops (the small tin boats that are part of traditional celebrations), Canarian wrestling and other sports and a folk concert from 4pm to 7pm.

Teguise‘s main event will be a Tenderete (Canarian folk session) in the marquee next to the marketplace at 8pm on Wednesday night. Entrance of free but those attending are requested to wear traditional Canarian dress.

In Playa Blanca, there’ll be Canarian wrestling on the town beach at 11 am on Thursday, followed by food tasting and folk concerts in the Plaza de Nuestra Señora de Carmen from 1 pm onwards.

Several more events are scheduled all over the island, and we’d recommend the website of your local Ayuntamiento for full details.
