The SARA Animal Protection Organisation in Lanzarote has reported another break-in at its shelter. The incident was discovered after staff found the door to their feed storage warehouse had been forced open.

In a statement shared on social media last week the shelter expressed its dismay. “This is an animal shelter. There is no money here, only sacks of food, tireless work, and lives that depend on it.”

According to the organisation, no items of significant economic value were taken. This fact reinforces the belief that this was not a conventional robbery, leaving volunteers puzzled by the motive.

The material damage to the facility, however, is substantial. For a group that operates solely on donations and volunteer work, the cost of repairs presents a significant burden.

“It’s hard to imagine that someone could stoop so low, knowing who they were harming,” the statement continued. SARA also extended thanks to the National Police for their swift response after being alerted.

Although no possibilities have been ruled out in the investigation, the organisation has spoken of the “helplessness and anger” caused by an attack that ultimately impacts the vulnerable animals in their care.

“The most important thing for us is that the animals are all fine,” said a spokesperson. SARA confirms it is continuing its normal operations despite the unsettling event.
