Tomorrow, Sunday the 23rd of June, will see San Juan celebrations take place all over Lanzarote. Here are a list of events.

San Juan is Spain’s midsummer bonfire night, celebrating St. John’s feast day and the longest day of the year. It is traditionally celebrated with a bonfire, a barbecue and music.

There’ll be bonfires in many places, but many will be private affairs. The public bonfires that have been published are as follows:

Haría

San Juan is Haría’s patron saint, and the celebrations here are the most famous on the island, with fearsome “devils” arriving to light the bonfire and perform the Fire Dance.

At 8.30 pm the brilliant timple master Domingo “El Colorao” Rodríguez will play in Haría’s square. The devilish shenanigans will begin at 11 pm in the carpark area next to the square.

Puerto del Carmen

The San Juan bonfire will be located at the foot of Calle Bajamar, near Playa Chica. The event will begin at 9 pm on Sunday evening, with grilled sardines and live music.

Tías

Tías Ayuntamiento says a bonfire will be lit at “el morro de la Tegala”. (We have no idea where this is, but guess it’s near the La Tegala restaurant)

Playa Honda

The bonfire at Playa Honda will be at the Playa de El Curita. There’ll be a barbecue, live music and DJ sets. The fun begins at 8pm.

Arrecife

In Arrecife, it’s a full day’s affair on Playa El Reducto, starting at 11 am with sporting displays, children’s activities, live music and a food fair. Sardines and corncobs will go on the barbecue at 7 pm and the bonfire will be lit at 9pm, with a firework display at midnight.
