Tonight is the Eve of San Juan’s Day, Spain’s bonfire night, which celebrates midsummer.

All over Lanzarote, preparations have been underway for dozens of bonfires, which will be lit tonight. People will eat barbecued sardines and roasted corn-on-the-cob and drink wine and beer.

The biggest event will take place in Haría, the town whose patron saint is San Juan. An opening ceremony will be held at 8.30 pm and the terrifying Diablos de Haría will light the bonfire, perform the Fire Dance and burn the effigy of Don Facundo at 11 pm.

In Puerto del Carmen there’ll be a bonfire at the foot of Calle Bajamar, with a barbecue from 9 pm and live music.

Arrecife will light its bonfire at Playa Reducto at about 9.30, although the event will commence at 5pm.  There’ll be live music, food trucks and kid’s activities.

In Playa Honda, the bonfire will be lit on the Playa de las Curitas at 9pm. From 5.30 onwards there’ll be music, magic, sports and a “collective wish-burning ritual”.

All these events are open to the general public, although many private bonfires will also be lit.

Tomorrow, 24th of June, will be a public holiday in the municipalities of Haría and Tías.
