Teguise Ayuntamiento has approved the final municipal permit needed to begin the full restoration of Luis Ramírez’s “Casa Modernista” in Caleta de Famara, clearing the way for work to start on one of Lanzarote’s most distinctive historic buildings.

The property, regarded as the island’s only Modernist building, has been in a state of deterioration for years.

Teguise council has now authorised conservation work on the building’s interior, complementing the permit for the restoration of the façade that was granted in February 2025. According to Teguise Mayor Olivia Duque, the Diocese of the Canary Islands, which owns the property, delayed starting work on the façade while waiting for approval of the interior restoration project.

The approved plans include structural reinforcement of floors and roofs, restoration of original architectural features, conservation of the terrazzo flooring, woodwork, walls and decorative finishes, as well as upgrades to essential building services to improve safety and habitability. The project will not increase the building’s height or footprint.

Mayor Duque said the restoration had required careful coordination to ensure the work complies with planning, environmental and heritage regulations while preserving the building’s historic character.

Casa Modernista

The house was purchased by Luis Ramírez González in 1920 and remodelled in 1933 as a summer residence. Its distinctive curved façade, inspired by the Modernist architectural movement, along with original interior features such as hydraulic tile floors, traditional woodwork and decorative details, make it one of the most unique historic buildings on the island.

Teguise Town Hall said the restoration reflects its commitment to protecting buildings that form part of the municipality’s cultural heritage and collective memory.
