STRANGE MONUMENT

Dear Editor,

Thank you for the Team’s best efforts in producing a monthly magazine, it is much appreciated.

When I drive out of Arrecife on the LZ-2, just after the Disa Petrol Station on the righthand side, I always notice a steadily improving and increasing ‘monument’.

Perhaps, ‘monument’ is a bit strong but nevertheless someone is going to a lot of trouble to personalise ‘something’.

If any of the Team know its background story, it might make a small, interesting article in the magazine. Just a thought.

John McLaren

Ed: We’ve noticed the same thing, John – a low-lying bunker with whitewashed rocks, pots and other odd decorations. Maybe one of our readers has an idea what it is?

SUPPORT FENCING

Dear Editor,

Reading “Sporting Life” in your March edition, I have to say I got a bit grumpy.

Why? Because it seems there is little or no support for new sports on the island.

When I introduced Fencing to the island seven years ago, I dreamed of maybe one day competing for the island with the other Spanish and Canarian clubs in existence – after all, it’s a Spanish sport.

Thanks to a lot of hard work by a few people Lanzarote now boasts two fencing clubs, Arturius and Lancelot.

We have achieved recognition and affiliation with the Royal Spanish Fencing Federation and the Canarian Fencing Federation, celebrating its 100th year this year and have participated in the Canarian championships and ranking tournaments over the last two years.

The thing is: we are never mentioned on any of the Ayuntamiento’s social media posts, never promoted, commiserated or congratulated on our efforts. Not one single mention that teams from our wonderful island have represented them.

All these posts have been shared by the Canarian federation hoping they would at least mention something, but nothing. It seems that if one is not Spanish there is very little interest.

We want to grow our clubs and that’s hard without some visibility.

Your magazine was kind enough to do a great article on our club in Tias a few years ago for which we are very grateful, but we need Cabildo support.

Please, Ayuntamiento – if you read this at least acknowledge our efforts and help grow this wonderful sport on our wonderful island.

Sincerely,

Paul Kersey

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL GROCER

Dear Gazette,

Why is there so much fuss whenever a new supermarket opens on the island? If it was a new name, like the Carrefour or Día stores you find elsewhere in Spain, I might understand, but it’s always the same four or five chains selling the same old products.

It’d be great to see a similar level of excitement and support for smaller grocery shops, which in my experience not only have better stock but can often be cheaper.

Yours, G. Roberts
