Almost 100 cheeses from Spain and the Canary Islands were submitted in this year’s Goat Milk Cheese Contest in Fuerteventura. 40 cheeses were locally produced in the Canaries while the rest came from Extremadura, Andalusia, Castilla y León, Murcia and La Rioja in the mainland.
The jury was made up of fifteen professional cheese tasters with the almost 100 cheeses competing to win awards in the various categories. The categories included cheeses made from pasteurised milk and with raw milk, each of which were divided into subcategories according to their maturity.
Quesería Montaña Blanca from Lanzarote won first prize for best soft cheese made from pasteurised milk, while Quesería el Faro, also from Lanzarote, was the runner up.
In the subcategory of semi-cured cheeses made from raw milk, Queseria Filo El Cuchillo from Tinajo was awarded first place “Best Cheese in the Canary Islands” in its category.
Mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín, congratulated the local cheesemakers, “Queseria Filo El Cuchillo after many years of demonstrating the excellent quality of their products wherever they go. Congratulations and continue to take the name of Tinajo to the top. Thank you.”
