Tías Ayuntamiento has approved a motion that will separate management of its long-disused municipal swimming pool from other sporting facilities in the municipality.
Councillor Mariana Pérez announced that contracts would be issued for instructors and lifesavers, outsourcing the “aquatic activities” in the pool.
Management of sports halls and cafeterias will be outsourced separately to private companies which would “assume the operational risk.” Previous tenders to manage all the facilities under one umbrella have proved unsuccessful.
Construction of the pool commenced in 2010 but, 15 years later, the building has never been used. There is still no opening date, but the council claims that a recent report states that the pool can be run at a profit.
In Yaiza, another long-delayed project also appears to be progressing. Mayor Óscar Noda has said that tenders will be issued for completion of the sports pavilion once assessors have reported. Now that the contract with the previous contractors, who went bust, has been legally terminated, Mayor Óscar Noda told El Diario de Lanzarote that “As long as there are no hitches, we’ll award the contracts before the year is out and the pavilion will be terminated withing six months.”
