A Tahíche prison guard has saved the life of an inmate after he started a fire in his cell by setting the mattress on fire.
The events took place on Monday night at approximately 10pm, when an inmate set fire to their mattress which caused the entire block to be evacuated.
The inmate called guards, after setting fire to their mattress, who arrived quickly with extinguishers and masks. The guards safely extinguished the fire and attended the inmate who began to suffocate due to the smoke.
Both the officer and inmate were taken to the Dr José Molina Orosa Hospital.
