Last wekened, Playa Blanca celebrated its first major multicultural event, Ritmos del Mundo (Rhythms of the World), bringing together 18 groups and 200 artists in the central Plaza del Carmen for 13 hours of performances between Friday and Saturday.

The diversity of dance, song, and music brought together traditions and creative expressions from every continent in one place, symbolising the unity that characterises this southern tourist resort, where residents of up to 80 nationalities live side by side.

Residents and tourists, young and old alike, enjoyed the universality of art, speaking the universal language of dance and music without barriers. In Playa Blanca, Indian music, Arabic dances, Argentine tango, Mexican mariachis, Chinese mysteries, African art, Caribbean rhythms, Canarian folklore, Andalusian flamenco, live Irish music, rock bands, and other artistic expressions shared the stage, turning the square into a meeting point adorned with joy and cultural fusion.

Ritmos del Mundo was a mixture of feeling, colour, elegance, sounds, and choreography, but above all, it was a creative gathering full of integration and emotions. “There is no room for hatred in our municipality. We are happy in our diversity, we recognize the work of everyone, and art is a beautiful way to showcase the multicultural richness of Playa Blanca and all of Yaiza,” notes Mayor Óscar Noda.

The Councillor for Events, Trade, and Consumer Affairs of Yaiza, Freya Finch, takes stock of this first experience of Rhythms of the World: “We are very satisfied with the public’s participation, the artistic level of the invited groups, and everyone’s assessment of the event, so the result encourages us to repeat it with improvements.”
