55.41% of all water produced on Lanzarote by Canal Gestión Lanzarote was wasted last year.
Canal Gestión Lanzarote produced a record of 31.8 million cubic metres of water in 2025, but only 14.2 million were metered by consumers. This means that 17.63 million cubic metres have been lost, either to leaks in the mains system or theft.
The losses are a slight improvement on last year, but waste has been fluctuating around the 55% level for several years, with no evidence of improvement.
It’s not just water that is wasted – almost 100 Gigawatts of power were used to desalinate water by the islands four main desalination plants- almost one eighth of the power produced by the island’s power stations.
In April, the Lanzarote Water Consortium will meet to decide on Canal Gestion’s proposal to transfer management of the island’s water to the companies Acualia and Sacyr. Action will also be taken on the proposed increase in water tariffs that has been submitted to the Canarian Pricing Commission.
The commission turned down a request for a tariff increase in 2024 because of volume of wasted water, saying it was “the highest that we have encountered.”
