More than 600 women have already taken part in the “Let’s Talk About Menopause” workshops, an initiative from Lanzarote’s Health Department. Held monthly, the sessions have become a gathering place where women can access accurate information and practical tools to navigate the menopause transition.
The need for such support is clear. Across Lanzarote and La Graciosa, over 15,000 women are currently in the perimenopausal stage (aged 45 to 54), while more than 25,000 are postmenopausal (aged 55 and over). The workshops (held in Spanish) are led by specialist Sonia Tejedor Magallanes, a midwife who coordinates each session with a focus on evidence-based care.
During the workshops, attendees explore critical issues including the impact of declining oestrogen levels on cardiometabolic health and metabolic syndrome. Hormone therapy for menopause is also analysed, drawing on scientific evidence to debunk myths and clarify both benefits and risks.
Other topics include healthy eating, with a special emphasis on the Mediterranean diet, and the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits. Notably, the sessions highlight the importance of both aerobic exercise and strength training.
Sleep features prominently, with practical guidelines for improving rest and combating insomnia. The workshops also address changes in body composition, covering the anatomical, hormonal, psycho-emotional and cardiometabolic aspects that characterise this stage of life.
The initiative takes a truly holistic approach, dedicating sessions to the impact of menopause on the brain and mood, as well as on sexual wellbeing. Genitourinary syndrome and pelvic floor care are also covered, complete with specific exercises.
Specialised Clinic Available at Costa Teguise
Beyond the workshops, midwife Sonia Tejedor sees all women referred from the various Primary Health Care Areas at the Costa Teguise Health Centre. The clinic is designed specifically for issues related to menopause and the climacteric.
It tackles symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, hormonal changes and emotional disturbances, offering individualised, comprehensive care to women in this stage of life who need it.
