Environmentalists have been alarmed by the news that Russia has agreed the construction of a nuclear power station with the Moroccan government. The facility, which will be used for “peaceful purposes” will be located at Sidi Boulbra, on the Moroccan coast 400 kilometres north east of the Canary Islands.
The agreement between Russia and Morocco will cover the building of infrastructure for nuclear power, including nuclear reactors, desalination plants and particle accelerators. Russia will also assist Morocco in the search for uranium deposits, supplies of nuclear material for reactors and research and management of nuclear waste.
No date has yet been offered for when work will begin or finish.
