The origin of a loud tremor in Playa Blanca yesterday afternoon has still not been confirmed.

Several residents contacted local police after a loud rumbling sound occurred at 3.30pm, rattling glassware. No serious damage was reported.

Initially, it was thought that the noise was an earthquake. On Thursday morning the National Geographic Institute (IGN) of Spain had reported several minor tremors on the islands, the strongest of which was a 3.1 magnitude quake at a depth of 33 kilometres near Lanzarote and Fuerteventura,

However, emergency services said that no tremors had been reported yesterday by the IGN, while Maritime Rescue services added that no underwater explosions had been registered.

Lanzarote’s Emergency y Consortium has speculated that the noise may have been caused by a meteorite entering the earth’s atmosphere. However, no final cause has yet been confirmed.
