The Temporary Attention Centre for Foreigners, a compound of tents near the police station in Arrecife, is now full, and newly arrived boats containing migrants are now being redirected to Fuerteventura.
The calm autumn weather has led to a rise in the amount of arrivals, and the interception of a boat containing 43 people yesterday morning has pushed the capacity of the centre to the maximum. As a result, two further boats that were intercepted later in the day were sent to Puerto del Rosario in Fuerteventura.
Newly arrived migrants usually spend around 48 hours in the CATE centre, before being moved to other centres on other islands or mainland Spain.
