Madrid has declared a mural created by César Manrique in 1954, as a cultural asset
The President of the community of Madrid, Ayuso, made the declaration in a document that also recognised the cultural heritage of the capital’s zarzuela (light opera) and cocido madrileño (boiled meat stew).
She described the mural as “a creation made of tiles depicting a water jug and a cement mixer, as well as bricklayers carrying sacks on their heads.” This description, however, only applies to the part of the mural visible from the street. More is hidden within the building at Calle Santa Cruz de Marcenado 9.
The declaration follows a ruling that suspended recent works on the building.
