Yaiza Mayor Óscar Noda has requested that the Cabildo take over the maintenance of the Los Ajaches Natural Monument, a protected area that contains the Papagayo beaches.
Noda claims that his council has been carrying out duties that are not its responsibility, such as repairing the dirt tracks to the beaches, putting up signs and general tidying.
He has sent a legal report to the Cabildo in which he alleges that the laws relating to the Natural Monument clearly place responsibility for its upkeep on the island government.; and has requested a meeting to resolve the issue.
The question of who will operate the entry station to Papagayo, currently operated by Yaiza council and which raised €175,000 in the first six months of this year, has not been mentioned.
