The Cabildo will sow 106 hectares of land with 8,000 kilogrammes of wheat in order to protect game species and other wildlife, as well as divert wildlife from eating commercial crops.

The project is being carried out in collaboration with the Lanzarote Hunting Society, who will provide the land for the wheat and take charge of sowing it. The crops will be sown in areas distributed throughout the island, which have the necessary moisture and nutrients to thrive.

“This campaign aims to guarantee the availability of food for game species and protect the crops of our farmers, preventing animals from being forced to invade these areas in search of food,” explained the president of the Lanzarote Island Council, Oswaldo Betancort.

The main species hunted on Lanzarote are rabbits, partridges and the common pigeon, and hunting can only take place on Thursdays, Sundays and public holidays between August and the end of October.
