The Cabildo has announced a new initiative, the ‘Lanzarote Bike Experience’, designed to solidify the island’s status as a world-class destination for cyclists.

The presentation was led by the Cabildo’s Public Works Councillor, Jacobo Medina, and Sports Councillor, Juan Monzón. They were joined by Fabio Cabrera, race director at Club La Santa, and former professional cyclist Luis Pasamontes.

“Lanzarote is already an established destination for cycling enthusiasts thanks to its ideal climate, landscape, and terrain throughout the year,” said Minister Jacobo Medina. “However, the project stems from the need to organise, improve, and enhance this experience for both national and international cyclists as well as for residents themselves.”

Echoing this sentiment, Monzón highlighted cycling’s popularity among visiting tourists. “Initiatives like this highlight the immense range of options available to athletes for training in our region,” Monzón stated.

The cornerstone of the Lanzarote Bike Experience is the creation and promotion of an extensive, integrated cycling network “spanning over 1,000 kilometres.” This network will seamlessly connect roads, paths, and dedicated bike lanes to link urban centres, tourist areas, and sporting sites.

With a commitment to road safety, sustainability, and accessibility, the project will define specific routes for both road and mountain bikes. Existing routes will be enhanced with clear, unified signage, and users will have access to downloadable route tracks.

Looking ahead, the next phases of the project will focus on creating strategic rest areas and developing a dedicated mobile application. This app will serve as a centralised hub for all relevant information, further improving the user experience.

A “Bike Friendly” Island

The councillors emphasised that the overarching goal is to transform Lanzarote into a fully “Bike Friendly” destination. This model aims to foster harmonious coexistence between sporting activity, the well-being of local residents, and a positive visitor experience, all aligned with the principles of sustainable mobility.
