Lanzarote has recorded an unprecedented tourism milestone, welcoming over two million visitors from January through July for the first time ever.
July’s Record-Breaking Figures
According to the Lanzarote Data Centre, the island saw 307,714 tourist arrivals in July. This is a 11.7% increase over the same month last year, which recorded 275,363 visitors.
A key driver of this growth was the robust recovery of the domestic Spanish market. Tourism from mainland Spain skyrocketed by 35.7%, with 45,125 travellers arriving in July. International travel also saw substantial growth, with 262,589 visitors from the rest of the world – an increase of 17,000 from July of the preceding year.
Growth across the Canaries
The increase extended across the entire Canary Islands. The latest data from the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC) show the islands collectively received 1.53 million tourists in July, a 9.6% increase (or 134,159 more tourists).
The market was predominantly international, with foreign nationals accounting for 84% of all arrivals. This segment grew by 7.4%, while the number of tourists residing in Spain increased by 22.9%.
Tourist Habits and Preferences
- The vast majority (63%) of tourists visiting the Canaries in July opted for stays between one and seven nights.
- A small fraction (0.5%) chose extended stays longer than 31 days.
- Nearly half of all visitors (51.7%) arrived on a pre-arranged package tour, defined as a service that bundles at least transportation and accommodation for a single, indivisible price.
