New data from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) reveals the Canary Islands have seen over 8,700 traffic accidents so far this year, a 2% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
The SUC reported 11,285 activations of health resources to attend to the 8,729 accidents recorded in 2025. This compares to 11,025 activations for 8,635 accidents last year. Some incidents required multiple resources to be mobilised.
By island, Tenerife recorded the highest number of incidents with 3,837, followed by Gran Canaria with 3,323. They were followed by Lanzarote (737), Fuerteventura (523), La Palma (223), La Gomera (46), and El Hierro (40).
The SUC emphasises that the immediate and correct action of witnesses at the scene of an accident is vital. It can ensure effective intervention by emergency services, minimise harm, and increase the survival rate of the injured.
What To Do
The SUC is reminding the public of the essential procedures to follow after witnessing a collision.
First, Protect the scene. Signal the location so other drivers can see what has happened. Stop in a safe place to assess the situation and ensure you are not putting yourself at risk.
Next, Alert the emergency services by calling 112. Answer the operator’s questions calmly and specifically to help them locate the accident and understand the situation. Key details include the number of injured and their condition, particularly their consciousness, breathing, and mobility. This information allows emergency service professionals to dispatch the correct resources.
Finally, Assist by following the instructions provided by doctors or nurses over the phone. They will guide you on safety and first aid measures to take while help is on the way.
