Lanzarote Quemao Class presented its 9th edition alongside Cabildo president, Oswaldo Betancort, and other councillors this week.

The Lanzarote Quemao Class has established itself as a benchmark event in Europe, not only in the sporting field, but also as a tourist, social and economic attraction for the island of Lanzarote. This has been achieved after the success obtained in its eight past editions, where it has broadened its horizons beyond sport.

This week it presented its 9th edition. During the presentation, Cabildo president, Oswaldo Betancort, explained that “from the Cabildo de Lanzarote we have supported this event with the firm conviction that the promotion of sporting activities such as this is a reflection of the importance of sport on our island and its connection with tourism”. “This year, in addition to celebrating sporting excellence, we have reinforced our commitment to education, the promotion of sustainability, youth sport and support for the primary sector.”

The Quemao Class competition attracts some of the world’s best surfers and bodyboarders to the Tinajo coast in a competition that looks to bring the best out of each participant.

The competition is currently on an “orange alert” waiting for the optimum wind and wave conditions. Once the green light is given, participants will converge on the small fishing village of La Santa to ride its famous El Quemao wave, which breaks directly offshore from the village.
