The 2026 Lanzarote Opera Festival will continue its programme on Saturday, September 19, with a performance of La verbena de la Paloma. The production will take place at 7:00pm at the Tías Municipal Theatre.
The festival is jointly organised by the Lanzarote Cabildo and the Nino Díaz Foundation.
Cabildo Councillor for Culture Jesús Machín Tavío said the festival continues to strengthen its position by bringing major works to local audiences.
“The Lanzarote Opera Festival continues to grow with a programme that brings great works from the operatic repertoire to the public and demonstrates that the island can host top-tier cultural events. Our collaboration with the Nino Díaz Foundation allows us to continue building a stable project that expands Lanzarote’s cultural offering and brings opera to new audiences,” he said.
A landmark of Spanish zarzuela
With music by Tomás Bretón and a libretto by Ricardo de la Vega, La verbena de la Paloma is widely regarded as one of the defining works of the género chico, the popular one-act form of zarzuela that flourished in Spain during the late 19th century.
Set against the backdrop of Madrid’s traditional summer festivities, the story blends humour, romance, jealousy and everyday life, while its memorable score has ensured its enduring popularity with audiences for well over a century.
