While the archipelago overall saw tourist numbers increase by 4.7% in September this year, Lanzarote has recorded a slight decline.

The Cabidlo, presided over by Oswaldo Betancort, and SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, state that this change is a conscious strategy. The focus is moving from sheer visitor volume to quality, sustainability, and value.

The island’s president and tourism minister, Oswaldo Betancort, stated that “these figures do not worry us, they reaffirm our position. We have been warning for months that Lanzarote cannot and does not want to grow without limits. We are committed to quality, respect for our natural resources and improving the added value of each visitor, not to a constant increase in arrivals.”

Betancort emphasises that the island “is coming to the World Travel Market in London as a destination that embraces its leadership with responsibility. We are not looking to be the fastest growing, but rather the best at managing our growth.”

Echoing this sentiment, the CEO of SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, Héctor Fernández, explained that the recent figures are part of a planned stabilisation. “The slight drop in September is part of a logical stabilisation trend after years of strong expansion. In cumulative terms, Lanzarote continues to perform robustly and steadily, with good indicators in average spending and occupancy, and a British market that remains key.”

Fernández added that the focus of the promotion strategy “is on strengthening the diversification of markets and products, from sports tourism to gastronomy and culture, consolidating the island’s position in the segments with the highest value and lowest impact.”

With this clear perspective, Lanzarote is attending the World Travel Market 2025 not as a destination chasing record numbers, but as a benchmark for responsible tourism and conscious management, reinforcing its message that balance is the new definition of success.
