Lanzarote has strengthened its ties with a key travel partner by signing a significant collaboration agreement with British Airways at the airline’s London headquarters.
The deal, finalised just before the start of the World Travel Market (WTM) in London, aims to enhance connectivity with the UK and advance the island’s strategy for a higher quality, more profitable tourism model.
The meeting was spearheaded by the Lanzarote Cabildo through its tourism agency, SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote. This agreement is seen as a decisive step towards stimulating demand, with the goal of increasing the current weekly flight schedule and consolidating the promotion of Lanzarote across the British Airways’ marketing channels.
Oswaldo Betancort, the Cabildo President and Minister of Tourism, stated that such agreements signal a new direction for the island. He said, “These types of meetings herald a new phase for Lanzarote, where we are not so much seeking growth in volume as in quality, promoting tourism that respects and consumes the island, generating a real return for the families of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.”
Echoing this sentiment, Héctor Fernández, the CEO of SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, commented, “The signing of this protocol with British Airways reinforces our commitment to visitors who value sustainability and excellence. We want to grow in connectivity, but also in added value and profitability for the destination.”
The partnership was also welcomed by the airline. Neil Chernoff, Director of Planning and Strategy at British Airways, emphasised that, “Lanzarote is a strategic destination within our network. This agreement will enable us to develop joint promotional activities and improve the experience of our customers, who are looking for exclusive destinations with a high level of service.”
The start of the World Travel Market this Tuesday will see a full schedule of key meetings for the Lanzarote delegation. These are set to continue the work of securing deals that align with SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote’s overarching strategy to establish a sustainable, differentiated, and high-value tourism model for the island.
