Lanzarote is celebrating a monumental achievement in the world of sports as local hero Hecher Sosa has officially signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the planet’s premier mixed martial arts organisation.

Sosa’s life-changing contract was secured in the early hours of Tuesday, September 17, following a stunning unanimous decision victory over the highly-touted Brazilian fighter, Mackson Lee. The bout took place on the global stage of Dana White’s Contender Series in Las Vegas, the ultimate proving ground for UFC hopefuls.

In a special reception at the Cabildo, the island’s institutions rallied to honour their newest sporting legend.

The island’s president, Oswaldo Betancort, stated “Lanzarote is very proud of Hecher Sosa, an athlete who has made history by joining the world elite of mixed martial arts. His perseverance, effort, and ability to overcome adversity are an example that inspires society as a whole, and especially our youth.”

This victory is not just a personal triumph for Sosa, but a landmark for Spanish sport. With this win, Hecher Sosa becomes the first Spaniard ever to enter the UFC’s bantamweight division through the Contender Series, catapulting Lanzarote’s name onto the international sporting map.

Juan Monzón, the Minister of Sports, highlighted Sosa’s journey as a testament to sheer determination. “Hecher’s victory against a high-level opponent and the contract obtained with the UFC are a clear reflection that, with sacrifice and discipline, dreams can come true,” Monzón said. “From the Cabildo, we will continue to support our athletes so that they can develop their talent and compete at the highest level.”

The signing marks the beginning of a new chapter for Sosa, who will now compete amongst the very best fighters on Earth.
