1,100 competitors are currently pushing themselves to the limit all over the island after the 33rd Lanzarote Ironman got under way this morning.
At 7pm the first hooter signalled the start for the male professionals, who immediately plunged into the sea at Playa Grande, Puerto del Carmen. They were followed five minutes later by the women, and at 7.10 the rest of the competitors took to the water, forming a thrashing chain of swimmers hundreds of metres long.
Conditions appear to be excellent for the competitors, with hardly any wind and coolish temperatures. The first athletes are expected to arrive back from the cycling stage after midday, when the marathon phase will commence. At around 3.30 pm the first professionals will cross the finish line, which will be the scene of high emotion, exhaustion and achievement until midnight.
Motorists are advised to be aware of possible road closures all over the island. More details here: https://www.ironman.com/races/im-lanzarote/traffic-impact
