Lanzarote has become the first of the Canary Islands to agree with the Canarian Government’s declaration of Renewable Energy Acceleration Zones for the installation of new solar panels and wind turbines.

In the maps published by the regional government, zones in Yaiza and Tinajo are already suitable for wind and solar farms, but potential areas that would require conditioning exist throughout the island, as long as they are cleared by agricultural, environmental and aviation bodies.

The projects envisaged include fields of solar panels on the ground and are likely to be opposed by Socialists who have advocated the use of existing roofs and “degraded areas” before developing rural land.

Tías Mayor José Juan Cruz said, “Our living depends on our image, on the countryside, we are a tourist island and we say that we should use built-up zones and degraded areas that have little impact.”

The full protocol and maps of the zones deemed suitable and apt for conditioning for wind and solar installations can be found at the following link: https://www.gobiernodecanarias.org/energia/descargas/SCyER/Portal/Renovables/ProtocolosZAR/Protocolo_ZAR_Lanzarote.pdf
