This weekend will see the culmination of the fiestas of Lanzarote’s unofficial patron, Our Lady of the Volcanoes – the most important local celebration of the year.
The fiestas celebrate the miraculous halting of volcanic lava in the 18th and 19th centuries, which spared the village of Mancha Blanca. Villagers later built the pretty church in honour of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows) who became known as Our Lady of the Volcanoes on the island.
Tonight, will see the 35th Nañino Díaz Cutillo Folk Concert, with traditional artists from all eight of the Canary Islands.
Tomorrow, thousands of islanders in traditional dress will make the pilgrimage to Mancha Blanca on foot to pay homage to Our Lady of the Volcanoes at 7pm.
On Sunday there’ll be a 9 pm concert by Vanesa Martín and local singer Rosana will perform on Monday evening at the same time.
The fantastic craft fair will also be open all weekend, from 10.30 am until 9pm.
Special buses will be laid on from Arrecife bus station to help revellers get there and back.
Motorists should be prepared for road restrictions in the centre of the island on Saturday and Sunday morning. One lane of the LZ-20 between Mozaga roundabout and the Monumento al Campesino will be out of use, as will part of LZ-30, in the same area.
In addition, restrictions are planned on the LZ-46 from Tiagua until Sunday morning; the LZ-56, through La Geria, also until Sunday morning; the LZ-58, between Masdache and La Vegueta; the LZ-67 in Tinajo; and on one lane of the LZ-409.
Monday will be a holiday on Lanzarote, although many shops and businesses in the resorts and larger shopping centres will remain open.
