The Cabildo has secured a grant of €895,061 to renovate 24 bus shelters in the Yaiza municipality.

This project forms part of the wider Agreement for the Canary Islands Strategy for Island Tourism Infrastructure.

Cabildo President, Oswaldo Betancort, emphasised the dual benefit of the initiative. “With these new bus shelters, we are moving towards more accessible and sustainable transport while strengthening the tourist image of one of our main tourist centres, Playa Blanca,” he stated. “Our priority is to offer residents and visitors modern, safe, and high-quality public transport, making Lanzarote a more competitive and connected island.”

Betancort explained that the shelters will be “integrated into the environment, respecting the original design,” and will specifically condition the surrounding areas to facilitate access for people with reduced mobility and create safer, more comfortable pedestrian routes.

Each new shelter will be equipped with sustainable and user-friendly features. Miguel Ángel Jiménez, the Cabildo’s Minister of Transport, detailed the improvements: “The installation of these shelters, which will have a photovoltaic system, LED lighting, and information panels, will make it possible to offer a safer, more comfortable, and more efficient service to regular transport users. In addition, we will incorporate sustainability and accessibility criteria that will contribute to more responsible and modern urban mobility.”

The Canarian Government’s subsidy will be fully financed from a designated tourism infrastructure budget, ensuring the funds are directly allocated to enhancing connectivity and accessibility on the island. This investment in Yaiza follows a similar ongoing project in another key tourist area. The Cabildo has already allocated over €600,000 to renovate approximately fifteen urban bus shelters in Costa Teguise, a project now nearing completion. Those works also focus on unifying the street furniture’s image while incorporating improved accessibility and safety standards for all users.
