Lanzarote’s Cabildo is considering “drastic measures” which may include the temporary prohibition of buggy tours in rural areas of the island.

After a public consultation period in which numerous complaints were received about the activities of organised buggy and quad tours, the Cabildo has announced that it is preparing regulations and authorised routes for such activities.

However, until this is ready the Cabildo claims that “drastic measures” may be required to protect the island’s environment.    A technical report claims that buggy tours may cause soil compaction and erosion, loss of fertile land, dust clouds, damage to crops and native plants, disturbance to wildlife, noise pollution, the appearance of new tracks, and deterioration of rural roads and infrastructure.
