The Lanzarote Cabildo has approved a financial injection of €200,000 to support the island’s animal welfare charities. The funding was agreed this Friday.
The substantial sum will be shared between two key non-profit organisations, SARA and LanzaAnimal, which are recognised for their essential work in animal protection and promoting responsible ownership.
The SARA Association is set to receive the larger portion of the grant, €150,000, for its project “Help to help them”. This initiative encompasses a wide range of actions, including direct animal protection, combating abuse and abandonment, and running identification, vaccination, and sterilisation campaigns. The funding will also support training and public awareness activities.
Meanwhile, the LanzaAnimal Association has been allocated €50,000 for its project, “Sheltering abandoned and/or abused animals for rehabilitation.” This specific programme focuses on the rescue and recovery of farm animals that have suffered from neglect or mistreatment, with the ultimate goal of rehabilitating them for use in educational and social projects.
Cabildo President, Oswaldo Betancort, emphasised the importance of the agreement. He stated, “This agreement demonstrates our sensitivity and commitment to animal welfare and to the entities that, day after day, dedicate their time and effort to caring for the animals that need it most.” Betancort further stressed that “in Lanzarote, we cannot turn a blind eye to animal abandonment or abuse; we must work together, administrations and associations, to build a fairer and more respectful island for all living beings.”
Echoing the President’s sentiments, the Animal Welfare Councillor, Armando Santana, said, “This aid is recognition of the tireless work of associations such as SARA and LanzaAnimal, with the aim of financing projects that promote animal protection and the fight against abuse and abandonment.”
Santana confirmed the Council’s ongoing dedication, adding, “The Cabildo will continue to promote policies that encourage responsible pet ownership, education, and public awareness about respect and care for animals.”
