The Cabildo has met with the island’s taxi cooperatives as part of a new initiative to improve taxi services, particularly in areas and at times when demand is highest.
Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort said closer cooperation between the Cabildo, local councils and the taxi sector is essential to modernise public transport and better serve both residents and visitors. He stressed that any improvements should be developed in collaboration with the industry itself.
A key focus of the meeting was tackling illegal transport services. Betancort made it clear that unlicensed operators will not be tolerated, confirming that the Cabildo will work alongside local councils, police and the Canary Islands Government to strengthen enforcement against unauthorised transport activities.
He also highlighted the importance of ensuring equal access to taxi services for everyone on the island.
“A tourist visiting the island is just as important as a local resident going food shopping in Argana. Everyone must have access to a good transportation service on the island,” Betancort said.
Regional Councillor for Transport and Mobility Miguel Ángel Jiménez explained that the aim is to bring public authorities and the taxi industry together to address Lanzarote’s transport challenges through cooperation rather than confrontation.
He said the initiative is designed to combat illegal transport while creating a coordinated strategy that supports taxi drivers and delivers a reliable, high-quality service for passengers.
The meeting was also attended by SPEL CEO Héctor Fernández. Discussions included proposals from taxi representatives to introduce a mobile app for bookings, create a more consistent image for the island’s taxi service, and develop joint requests to the Canarian Government.
The overall objective is to modernise the sector and ensure Lanzarote’s taxi service reflects the high standards expected of one of the Canary Islands’ leading tourist destinations.
