Lanzarote Approves Plan to Promote Responsible Hunting and Animal Welfare

The Cabildo has approved a motion to develop a Plan for awareness and best practices in hunting. A proposal introduced by Councillor Armando Santana.

Santana said the initiative followed months of discussions with hunting associations, animal welfare organisations, SEPRONA (Spain’s Nature Protection Service), institutional representatives, and the Cabildo’s Hunting Department.

He said the goal was to build consensus rather than create division, arguing that responsible hunters should not be judged by the actions of a small minority. Although he acknowledged that hunting is not something he personally supports, Santana said it remains part of Lanzarote’s rural and social landscape and that public institutions should work with all sectors to improve standards.

The approved plan calls for the creation of awareness campaigns, training programmes, a Code of Best Practices, and regular forums bringing together public authorities, hunting organisations, and animal protection groups. It also proposes closer cooperation with SEPRONA to encourage responsible hunting practices.

In addition, the initiative includes measures to improve the welfare of hunting dogs by promoting responsible ownership, proper identification, and appropriate care.

Santana said the agreement demonstrated that common ground could be reached by focusing on the public interest rather than confrontation. He described the plan as an opportunity for Lanzarote to become a pioneer in the Canary Islands by balancing local traditions with sustainability and animal welfare, while strengthening the island’s reputation for responsible environmental and community practices.
