Emergency services have issued a warning about the presence of examples of Portuguese man-of-war and other types of sail jellyfish at Playa La Garita in Arrieta, Haría.
Examples of jellyfish have also been reported on the southern coast of the island, on the beaches of Las Cucharas and Jablillo in Costa Teguise, Guacimeta in Playa Honda, and Matagorda in Puerto del Carmen.
The sting of the Portuguese man-of-war can cause severe pain. Another type of sail jellyfish, the By-The-Wind Sailor, is also frequent but less painful. This jellyfish is usually smaller, and a brilliant sapphire blue colour, while the Portuguese Man-Of-War is purplish
Bathers in the area are urged to take extreme precautions and avoid contact with these marine organisms.
