The Guardia Civil’s wildlife division, Seprona, is investigating a company based in Playa Blanca which is suspected of organising tourist excursions to fish for protected species.
The investigation started after the company posted photos of sharks and butterfly rays that it been caught on social media, prompting complaints from environmental groups. The photos were taken on dry land and the fish involved were apparently dead.
While accidental catches of protected species are not punishable by law, the investigation will rest on whether the company was deliberately fishing for prrotected species, and the photos, which have since been taken down, could provide evidence for this.
