According to the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), the island is home to an average of 249,095 people every day. This is made up of 166,878 residents and, on average, 82,217 tourists.

ISTAC arrives at this calculation by taking tourist arrival data, multiplying it by the number of days they stay, and dividing the total by the 365 days of the year.

There are two municipalities where the tourist population actually exceeds the number of residents on any given day.

The most dramatic difference is seen in the south of the island. Yaiza has a residential population of 18,698, but it plays host to a daily average of 28,405 tourists. This brings the total to 47,103 people.

Close behind is its neighbour, Tías. Here, the figure surpasses the 50,000 mark. With 21,671 residents and an average of 28,405 tourists staying overnight each day.

Teguise ranks third in terms of overall daily volume, with 41,288 people present. This figure is composed of 23,946 residents and an average of 17,342 tourists per day.

In the island’s capital, Arrecife, ISTAC data shows 72,696 people. This is largely driven by the resident count of 70,265, with an average of just 2,431 tourists staying overnight. However, this calculation does not account for the thousands of cruise passengers who arrive in the city each day, as they do not stay in local accommodation.

Tinajo sees a daily tourist population similar to that of the capital, averaging 2,423 travellers. Combined with its 6,904 residents, the in the municipality reaches 9,327 people.

In the north, Haría has a daily average of 1,887 tourists. When added to the 5,650 residents living in the municipality, the total population present each day comes to 7,537 people.

Finally, San Bartolomé registers as the municipality with the fewest tourists on the island. Every day, an average of 1,322 tourists stay overnight there. Added to the 19,744 residents, the total in San Bartolomé rises to 21,066 people.
