A demonstration demanding action on the housing crisis has been called for this Saturday in Arrecife.

Tenants’ associations and other social groups have called for a national protest against “evictions, unaffordable rents, and housing speculation.” They produce statistics that show that rents have doubled in the Canaries over the last decade while the region has the second-lowest average salary in Spain.

Organisers are calling for lower rents, the expropriation of vacant homes owned by vulture funds, a suspension of evictions and the repossession of tourist apartments for permanent housing. “We want public housing to remain public and accessible to all,” they stress.

The demo will take place at midday in front of the Casa Amarilla (old Cabildo building) on Arrecife’s main shopping street, Calle León y Castillo.  Simultaneous demos will also take place in other Canary Islands and on mainland Spain.
