The number of holiday rentals on Lanzarote has more than doubled in the last two years, according to the Canarian General Tourist Registry.
The total of vivendas vacacionales has increased from 5.198 in June 2023 to 10,555 in July 2025. In fact, another 398 holiday lets have been added in the last two months.
The huge increase coincides with the proposed law of holiday rentals that the Canarian Government is seeking to pass in parliament. Originally formulated with the intention of limiting holiday rentals, the law will place severe restrictions on future holiday lets and has led to a rush of registrations before it comes into force, despite calls for a moratorium.
Maria Dolores Corujo, the ex-President of the Cabildo for the Socialist party, attacked Oswaldo Betancort, current Cabildo President and Fernando Clavijo, Canarian President, both of the Coalición Canaria party. “They have put a sign saying, “For Rent” on the whole island while thousands of families can’t find a place to live,” she said: “It’s total deregulation.”
