Today is Dia de Canarias, a public holiday on all eight of the Canary Islands.
On this day in 1983, the first session of the Canarian parliament took place in Tenerife, marking the first time in history that the islands were governed by their own elected Canarian representatives.
42 years on, the date has become an annual celebration of traditional Canarian culture, with hundreds of events on the islands. Check our guide from yesterday or head to your local Ayuntamiento’s website to find out what’s on near you.
Public buildings, most chemists and banks will be closed today, and it’s not a good day to go shopping outside of the resorts. Nevertheless, larger supermarkets, shopping centres and many businesses in the resorts are likely to remain open, and you’re likely to see shop assistants wearing traditional costumes and shops playing Canarian folk music.
